Hi,
Today we saw a puffin going in and out of its nest and it randomly stood on a rock then had a look in another nest.
We felt excited.

That’s fantastic Chloe!
The puffins are currently preparing their nests and will be laying eggs in the next few weeks!
Hi.
How many puffins are there on the island?
Also, we would like to know what they eat.
Thank you.
4RS.
Hello!
Last year we had 143 pairs of Puffins (286 individual birds). We will not know the number of birds we have this year until the end of season count in July!
A Puffin’s favourite food is a small silver fish called a sandeel. When they can’t find any sandeels to eat they choose to eat marine worms and small crustaceans such as shrimps instead.
Hi.
Where is the biggest puffin and the smallest puffin
thank you
regards 4RS
Hello,
All the Puffins we have on Burhou are called Atlantic Puffins and they are all a similar size – 28-34cm (head to tail) with a wingspan of 45cm and they weigh about 500g.But in the Puffin family there are 3 more different species which are Horned Puffins (38cm long, 60cm wingspan, 615g), Tufted Puffins (38cm long, 74cm wingspan,750g) and Rhinoceros Auklet (28cm long, 60cm wingspan, 400g).
Look these different Puffins up on the internet. What differences can you see between these Puffins and the Atlantic Puffins we have here on Alderney?
Hi.
How many eggs get layed by puffins?
thank you
regards 4RS
Hello!
Puffins only lay one egg which is why it is important we don’t disturb the parents during this time.
thanks from harris
Hi.
How long can puffins fly
Hello,
Puffins fly for as long as they need to. Sometimes they have to fly for long distances if they can’t find any food close to their nest but they don’t go very far (sometimes only 10 miles away) and they can fly quite fast up to 55 miles per hour which means they can reach places quickly and get back to their chicks.
thanks from harris
Howdy,
what is the weght of a puffin.
Hello!
Puffins are a lot smaller than most people think they are. They only weigh 500g!
hi we need to know how many puffins are in a island somone know from 4RS anna
Hi Anna,
Last year we had 143 pairs of Puffins nesting on Burhou. This year we won’t know the exact number until later on in the season, but just last weekend we saw 114 Puffins rafting next to Burhou!
And by the way i need to know do puffins have nests? from 4RS anna
Hi again Anna,
Yes Puffins have nests but these nests are a little bit unusual. This is because Puffins nest in burrows! They can either dig their own burrow or quite often they make use of old rabbit burrows.
umm?
oh ok
thanks!
Hi
What colour are the puffin eggs?
Thank you
4RS Arwand
Hi Arwand,
Puffin eggs are a creamy colour.
Hello! i wanted to ask what sea do they live in? from Laurynas
Hi Laurynas,
Puffins are distributed throughout the North Atlantic Ocean. They reach as far North as Greenland and as far South as the Canary Islands.
thank you, Holly Marshal
and i ment what sea do puffins live in? from laurynas
Hi
How are baby puffin born?
Also what country do they live?
Thx 4RS from Arwand!
Hey Arwand,
Pufflings hatch from an egg after being incubated for 36-44 days.
Puffins can be found all over the North Atlantic Ocean but 60% of the entire population are found in Iceland.
What sup
How many eggs dose a puffin lay?
From Arwand 4RS
Hi Arwand,
A Puffin only lays one egg each year.
Hi I like to know where puffin lives
Hello!
In the summer Puffins nest in burrows under the ground. Once a pair have laid an egg they will take it in turns to sit on it and keep it warm whilst the other Puffin rests out on the water. In the winter Puffins live out in the open ocean, they only come close to land when they are breeding here on Burhou.
Hi
How many puffins are on the island .
Also what is the island called
Regards Hosay 4RS.
Hello Hosay,
Last year there were 143 pairs of Puffins on the island which is called Burhou. We won’t know the number of pairs this year until we count how many burrows were used at the end of July when they have all raised their chicks and left the island.
hi guys
Hi
what is the island called
from Hosay 4RS
Hello Hosay,
The island we live on is called Alderney. The island the Puffins live on is called Burhou.
How much does puffin are in Alderney
Hi,
Last year we counted 143 pairs of Puffins but we need to wait a little while longer to find out how many we have this year.
hello
How many miles can puffins fly
from Hosay 4RS
Hi Hosay,
During the breeding season the Puffins tend to only forage 10km from their burrow but they can travel as far as 100km. After the breeding season they disperse widely across the Atlantic so much so that scientists haven’t discovered how far they go yet!
Where do puffin live
Hi,
Puffins can be found throughout the North Atlantic Ocean but our Puffins live on a little island 1 mile from Alderney called Burhou.
Hi
how many eggs dose a puffin lays
from Helen
Hi Helen,
Puffins only lay one egg during the breeding season which is why it is very important not to disturb them
Hi it’s Harris
please may I know about aldeney.
thanks Harris
Hi Harris,
Alderney is a small island within the Channel Islands. We are about 8 miles West of France which means we sometimes get slightly warmer weather than the UK but it often doesn’t feel very warm because we get lots of wind straight off the Atlantic sea! There are about 2,000 people that live here all year round but in the summer we get lots of tourists and this can double our population to about 4,000 people which can make the island feel very busy.
For such a small island we have lots of wildlife and lots of green fields which is nice! It’s really lovely here at the minute because we have wildflowers which are all across the south cliffs and it makes the island look really pretty. All of our birds should be sat on eggs now and in about 4 weeks time we should start to see them coming back to their nests with food in their beaks ready to feed their chicks so as the seabird ecologist this is the exciting part of my job!
Howdy,
How female puffin lay their eggs?
From Arwand
Hi Arwand
The female Puffin will lay her egg in April/May and both her and the male will take it in turns to incubate it. She lays a single egg and incubates it for 36-45 days.
hi this is hosay
do female puffins lay the eggs or the male on does
also what is the weight of a female puffins, the weight of a baby puffin and the weight of a male puffin ?
regards Hosay
Hi Hosay,
The Female Puffin lays the eggs. The males and females are of a similar size and weigh around 400g. Newly hatched chicks weigh 35-
45grams, when pufflings fledge they are only 70% of the parents weight.
