The Shag chicks are almost ready to fledge now with their adult water proof feathers covering most of their body and only a small amount of fluff left on their heads.  We expect them to leave the nest any day now and head for the sea where they will spend the next month or so in local waters around Jethou, Herm and Guernsey before over wintering anywhere as far as Brittany.  The first year of a shag’s life is the most dangerous, with a high mortality rate.
